Christmas Card 2021

Every year my grandfather would make amazing, abstract, three dimensional, Christmas cards. It was him who inspired me to take up lino printing in the first place. To carry on his tradition each year I create a print for my own cards. For 2021 our late cat, Bobby, was the subject of my lino cut; offering a socially distanced Christmas greeting.

The design was first created in Adobe Illustrator before separating the two colour blocks on to their own artboards. I could then trace over the printouts and transfer the outlines to my blocks.

With the help of registration marks on the printouts I was able to (in theory) perfectly align the blocks, which would allow me to carve both at the same time. As I had sized each block to A6 size for greeting cards, I could use the edge of the paper as a reference and get the repeatability of a more complex registration setup with minimal set-up.

Bobby came into our lives as a senior cat, and would sadly pass away in February 2022. He bought so much love to this household. I still think about him every day.
